LUSM Undergraduate Won the Third Prize in 2019 Interdisciplinary Contest in Modeling
Recently, the results of the 2019 Mathematical Contest in Modeling/Interdisciplinary Contest in Modeling (MCM/ICM) have been announced. LUSM undergraduate, Xiuqi Jiang and his LZU team members won the 3rd prize of ICM. The team was composed of Xiuqi Jiang, Zhi Qian, undergraduate from College of Civil Engineering and Mechanics and Pin Chen, undergraduate of School of Information Science and Engineering, with Zhaofu Hong, associate professor of LUSM as advisor.
LZU team has chosen the ICM Problem D: Time to leave the Louvre, which required the participants to provide optimal plan for emergency evacuation and design the best evacuation route and evacuation plan in emergency situations, and help evacuate people in the shortest time. In 4 days, under the advice of Prof. Hong, though from different majors, the students carried out cooperation actively and effectively. After an effective analysis of the problem, they used their respective advantages to search for literature, brought each one’s idea together, designed and developed a multi-source evacuation model which helped solve the problem successfully and the solution was submitted to the committee in the form of a paper. During the intensive competition, the team has successfully completed modeling, solving, verifying and writing, which has embodied the participant’s abilities of analyzing and solving problems and has proved the advantage of multi-disciplinary cooperation and interdisciplinary in research.
Xiuqi Jiang, the leader of the team, has achieved excellent results during his undergraduate study and has been recommended to Nanjing University for further study. He has won national scholarship and university-level scholarship for many times, and has won prizes and honors including the silver award of Internet + Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition Gansu Final, silver award of China College Students' Entrepreneurship Competition in Gansu Division, excellent community leader of Lanzhou university, excellent innovation and entrepreneurship training project of Lanzhou university. He is one of the founders of overseas exchange association of Lanzhou University, and has studied in Tsinghua University in Taiwan and university of Malaya as exchange student.
MCM/ICM are launched by the Consortium for Mathematics and Its Applications (COMAP). The first MCM contest was held in 1985 and ICM in 2000. They are the ancestors of all kinds of mathematical contests in modeling. The Contemporary Undergraduate Mathematical Contest in Modeling (CUMCM), which has wide influence in China, was derived from it. At present, MCM/ICM have four kinds of prizes: the outstanding prize (O+F prize), the first prize (M prize), the second prize (H prize) and the third prize (S prize). More than 25,000 teams from the United States, China, Canada, Australia, Singapore, the United Kingdom, Finland, Mexico and other countries and regions have participated in the 2019 contests, including students from Harvard University, Princeton University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Tsinghua University, Peking University and other internationally renowned universities. It is reported that this year, the overall award-winning rate of the competitions has decreased by about 25% compared with previous years.
