Recently, the team of Professor Zhang Guoxing of LUSM published their latest research results titled “Contributions of cleaner production and end-of-pipe treatment to NOx emissions and intensity reductions in China, 1997-2018” in the Journal of Environmental Management, an international authoritative journal in the field of environmental management. The study analyses the NOx emissions/intensity changes at different levels (national level,demand level, sector level and transmission level) and transmission layers in China in the last two decades (1997–2018) by using structural decomposition analysis and structural path analysis under the input-output framework.

The study extends the research time span, further discusses the driving factors of NOx emission/intensity changes, and differentiates and quantifies the effects of end-of-pipe treatment and cleaner production. The results show that the reduction of NOx in China mainly benefits from the improvement of end-of-pipe treatment and energy efficiency, and the transformation and upgrading of energy structure is the potential source of future emission reduction. The critical sectors for future NO_x reduction are the construction and building materials industry, transportation and other services industry. 

The article was published online on Nov. 20 in the Journal of Environmental Management with Professor Zhang Guoxing of the School of Management, Lanzhou University as the first author, his PhD student Han Jilei the second author and Professor Su Bin of National University of Singapore the co-author. LUSM is the first author affiliation of the paper. This research was supported by National Social Science Foundation of China. 

Professor Zhang Guoxing has long been engaged in the research of energy and environmental management and environmental regulation policy. His researches have been supported by the General Program and Key Program of National Natural Science Foundation of China, Key Project of the National Social Science Foundation of China, and the key science and technology projects of the State Grid in 2022. For the past five years, Prof. Zhang has published over 30 high-level papers in Scientific Data, Journal of Environment Management, Energy Policy, Journal of Cleaner Production, Socio-Economic Planning Sciences, Environmental Impact Assessment Review, International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health, Journal of Management Science in China, Chinese Journal of Management Science, Management Review, Systems Engineering-Theory and Practice, Study in Science of Science, China Population, Resources and Environment, etc. The relevant research results have been reported by NASDAQ, World Bank, NASDAQ Foundation, China Social Science Network and other institutions and media at home and abroad.
