LUSM Delegation Participated in the 11th University Scholars Leadership Symposium in Thailand
From August 1 to 4, the 11th University Scholars Leadership Symposium (USLS) was held in Bangkok, Thailand, hosted by the United Nations Global Compact and the Humanitarian Affairs Asia. More than 450 university faculty and students from 46 countries and regions attended the conference. At the invitation of the USLS, led by Li Yanxia, Deputy Secretary of the LUSM Party Committee, 8 students from the 6th Undergraduate Model Program of Leadership and Social Responsibility of LZU participated on behalf of Lanzhou University.
On August 1, the conference officially kicked off. Mr. Kim Solomon, UN Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs in Asia, Ms. Janice Leong, UN Regional Director for Asia, Department of Humanitarian Affairs in Asia, and Ms. Gita Sabharwal, UN Coordinator in Thailand, delivered speeches, encouraging the young students to take this seminar as an important learning and exchange opportunity, to pay attention to the social change, and to lead and benefit the world with their own actions to lead and benefit the world.
During the keynote speeches, seven invited speakers focused on "Making a Difference", "Saving Lives", "Bringing Hope to Children", "Doing Something Big", "The World Needs You" and so on. Students participated and thought deeply, asked questions and exchanged ideas with students from other universities.
On August 4, the LUSM delegation chose to participate in the thematic workshops (parallel forums) on "Migration and Sustainable Development Goals", "Green Employment for Youth", "Human Rights and Humanitarian Response", and "Disaster Risk Reduction", etc. Delegation members actively exchanged ideas with delegates from other countries and regions, taking the Chinese context as the starting point of the dialogues, and showing the unique perspectives of Chinese youth and students from Lanzhou University.
August 3 was the Love Service Day of the conference. With the theme of "Let Love Be Passed On", projects such as "River Cleanup", "Tree Planting", "Campus Painting", were provided for students. LUSM students chose to participate in one of the projects according to their own interests. With local volunteers, they cleaned up the garbage in the Chao Phraya River in Bangkok, planted 1,200 polonium trees in the countryside, refurbished and painted the local elementary school, and communicated with the villagers in the vicinity, which not only helped them experience the Thai culture, but also promoted the environmental protection and the idea of paying attention to the basic education in a concrete way.
Through participating in the seminar, the students built up a wide network with university students from different countries, showed the charm of LZU students, and made the voice of China and LZU heard to the world for solving the current social problems. Fan Xiaoyu, a member of the delegation, said at the end of the activity, "After this conference, I realized more clearly the responsibility and mission of the youth in the new era. The creation of a world community with a shared future cannot be separated from the attention, support and participation of every young person in the world. As students of Lanzhou University, we should not only pay attention to our own growth, but also care about social and world issues, and integrate our own development into the national development and world development, and effectively fulfill the mission and responsibility of Chinese youth."
