LUSM Delegation Participated in the 12th University Scholars Leadership Symposium in Thailand

From August 6 to 10, the 12th University Scholars Leadership Symposium (USLS) was held in Bangkok, Thailand, hosted by the United Nations Global Compact and the Humanitarian Affairs Asia. More than 500 university faculty and students from 50 countries and regions attended the conference. At the invitation of the USLS, led by Dr. MA Xiang, Senior Research Fellow of LUSM, 10 students from the 7th Undergraduate Model Program of Leadership and Social Responsibility of LZU participated on behalf of Lanzhou University.

On August 6, the conference officially kicked off. Mr. Kim Solomon, UN Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs in Asia, and Ms. Janice Leong, UN Regional Director for Asia, Department of Humanitarian Affairs in Asia, delivered speeches, encouraging the young students to take this seminar as an important learning and exchange opportunity, to pay attention to the social change, and to lead and benefit the world with their own actions to lead and benefit the world.

During the keynote speeches, seven invited speakers focused on "Leadership", "Changemaking", "Connecting People in A World of Need", "Bridging the Digital Divide", and so on. Students participated and thought deeply, asked questions and exchanged ideas with students from other universities, making their voices of LZU at the interntaional platform, showing the high concern and unique insights of LZUers on global issues.

The Kindness Day of the conference fell on August 8, providing the students with such projects as “Campus Renovation”, “Tree Planting” and “Refugee Camp Condolences”. Each student chose to take part in one project according to his/her interest. With local volunteers, they planted 800 polonium trees in the suburbs, refurbished and painted the local elementary school, and communicated with the refugees at the refugee camp, which not only helped the participants experience the Thai culture, but also promoted ideas of protecting environment and enhancing basic education in concrete ways.

Through participating in the seminar, the students built up a wide network with university students from different countries, showed the charm of LZU students, and made the voice of China and LZU heard to the world for solving the current social problems. The world today is experiencing a profound changes unseen in a century, as Chinese youth in the new era, we should be good at communication and cooperation, dare to embrace changes, have the courage to cope with the challenges, tell a good story of China and disseminate the voice of China in the international arena, and show the elegance of “Constantly Improving, Blazing Our Own Path” as well as the responsibility and commitment of the young students of Lanzhou University.
